Huntsville Cosmetology Students Assist Operation Stand Down
Dec 20, 2010
The fourth annual Operation Stand Down took place at Joe Davis Stadium recently in Huntsville, and cosmetology students from Virginia College were there to provide free haircuts to homeless veterans.
Operation Stand Down is a grassroots, community-based intervention program designed to help the nation's estimated 260,000 homeless veterans combat life on the streets. These men and women are brought together in a single location for three days and are provided access to the community resources that, hopefully, will help renew their spirit, health and overall sense of well-being.
In addition to the haircuts, there were medical screenings, dentistry services, housing services, and social security benefit reviews. Representatives from the VA were also there.
Now a national movement that began in San Diego in 1988, it is estimated that more than 100,000 homeless veterans have received assistance at Stand Downs.
