Half marathon training builds teamwork for Online leaders

They spent cold Sunday mornings running together, managed to finish a 13.1-mile race together, and ended up a stronger team.

Virginia College Online Division's leadership team recently fulfilled a commitment to complete the Mercedes Half Marathon. The goal was suggested as a team-building exercise by a new member, Rita Chubick, VP Academic Operations. It was believed by some to be far-fetched--especially for Stan Banks, President, who was new to running.

For four months Rita and Stan trained with seasoned runners Jeff Herle, SVP Operations and Chris Freeman, VP Academic Affairs. In addition to weekday workouts the group met early Sunday mornings for longer runs. According to Stan, the experience "deepened our friendships, strengthened our working relationships and established us as a true team."

They were in good company on race day, joining over 7,000 runners of all levels and strengths. As the quartet crossed the finish line together they realized that their hard work and dedication had paid off--and then started planning their next half marathon at Talladega Raceway this spring.
