State providing food support to those affected by recent storms

May 11, 2011

Residents of designated tornado disaster areas can now receive food assistance from a program started by the Alabama Department of Human Resources.

Alabamians who don't receive regular food assistance may qualify based on income, property damage and other disaster expenses. They must apply in their home counties and must have identification. The program is in effect in Cullman, DeKalb, Franklin, Jefferson, Lawrence, Marshall, Tuscaloosa and Walker counties. Other counties that were designated disaster areas will be added in coming weeks.

Current recipients of "food stamps" will automatically receive the maximum amount for the month. For more information call 1-800-997-8888.
