Virginia College-Jackson's Practical Nursing Program Receives Initial Accreditation from Mississippi Community College Board

Sep 18, 2011

At its September 16, 2011 meeting, members of the Mississippi Community College Board voted unanimously to move Virginia College's Practical Nursing program from Preliminary Accreditation to Initial Accreditation status. Initial Accreditation is the fourth step in a five-step process to gain Full Accreditation.

Virginia College's Practical Nursing program was denied Initial Accreditation status at the March 18, 2011 meeting of the Mississippi Community College Board. Virginia College appealed this decision. After review, that appeal was later denied. Virginia College was instructed to submit a Corrective Action Plan, outlining the steps the college would take to correct all issues which had resulted in its non-compliance with accreditation standards. Once the corrective plan was submitted and implemented, an accreditation team composed of three Practical Nurse educators and two MCCB staff conducted a revisit on August 30, 2011. Based on the positive findings and recommendation of the team, the Mississippi Community College Board approved Virginia College's Initial Accreditation Status. Virginia College will be eligible to apply for Full Accreditation in six months.
