Frozen art and artful healing at Culinard
Feb 15, 2012
Students at Culinard, the Culinary Institute of Virginia College in Birmingham, were recently treated to a lecture and demonstration on the fundamentals of ice carving by Nick Hartmann from Ice by Design. For the event, Mr. Hartmann carved a Christmas Reindeer.
Chef Antony Osborne, Dean of Culinard, said, "Nick is renowned in the state of Alabama for his fabulous creative carvings and we were most fortunate that he could spend some time showcasing his skills for the college."
Chemotherapy and radiation treatment can make eating an ordeal for cancer patients, depriving them of the nutrition they need. But Dr. Luis Pineda, a Birmingham oncologist and Culinard alumnus, stays busy developing new recipes that make food more palatable for these patients.
Dr. Pineda was featured in a recent edition of UAB Magazine. A lifelong food lover, he completed a fellowship at the UAB School of Medicine in 1982 and was one of the original members of UAB's bone marrow transplant program.
