GAA alumnus Godfrey chosen as assistant pro at Penn State
May 23, 2012
Nick Godfrey's choice to attend the Golf Academy of America in Myrtle Beach, S.C., has paid off. Godfrey, 25, has been hired as an assistant golf pro at Penn State.
"I've been working primarily on the Blue Course, and my first major responsibility was working the Big 10 tournament," Godfrey said. "It was a great experience, and the course is fantastic."
Godfrey, who attended Cathedral Prep, Villa Maria and East, and spent two years at Erie Community College in Buffalo, decided to seek a job in golf.
"I went there (to Golf Academy of America) in 2010 and finished in December, and I learned every aspect of the business, like club fitting, teaching, course management and business operations and everything else," he said. "I wanted to stay in the South, but I interviewed for a position at Penn State, and I was ecstatic that I got the job."
Head pro and general manager Joe Hughes and assistant pro and merchandise coordinator Brian Short have had a huge influence on Godfrey in his short time at the State College courses.
"Everyone has been so friendly here, and Joe and Brian are tremendous to work for," Godfrey said. “They have taught me a lot, and I look forward to every day I come to the course."
