Montgomery, Chattanooga and Tulsa campuses report in

Oct 4, 2012

Cosmetology students at Virginia College in Montgomery, led by instructor Bobbie Melton, recently traveled to the Rehabilitation Center in nearby Prattville to perform volunteer services such as manicures, styling and haircuts. The students enjoyed giving back to the community and the residents were impressed with the services rendered. One resident went to her room and returned with a tip for one of the students.

Student James McCreary had this to say about the experience:

"My first client was Mr. Jerry. He has been in the facility for 13 years and was full of life. In fact, he likes to be called a party animal. Like most people there he was in a wheelchair, except his was more like a bed. His father usually cuts his hair but he hasn't been able to cut it recently. Doing this and being there helps you appreciate the things that you have and enjoy them while you can."

Also in Montgomery, staffers recently showed their support for Campus President Madeline Little and her cancer journey with a pot luck lunch. Ms. Little (center, in red) was appreciative and commented that the lunch was, "worthy of Thanksgiving."

Students at Virginia College School of Business and Health in Chattanooga were honored at the Alpha Beta Kappa National Honor Society luncheon in September. Twelve students were selected for induction for their academic excellence, 90 or higher attendance and community service involvement. They include Jana Preston, Jasmine Thomas, Brittany Johnson, Danielle Cross, Paula Tilley, Nanette Billingsley, Jessica Merchant, Brandi Francis, Karen Scott, Leslie Nation, Windy Rackley and Canessa Thomas.

The Tulsa campus held its first College Career Fair in September with 18 employers including American Republic Insurance Services, Northwestern Mutual, Tulsa Urban League, Tulsa Job Corps and Oklahoma Employment Security Commission Workforce.

Other employers exhibiting at the College Career Fair include Freedom House Teen Challenge, Bios/A Better Life Homecare, MidFirst Bank, Tulsa County Sherriff's Office, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, DirectTV, Lloyd Richards Personnel, Tulsa County, Army National Guard, NCO and Workforce Oklahoma/ResCare Workforce Services.
