Jan 16, 2013

To support ECA's mission of an improved student experience, Dr. Kristi Julian recently attended and presented at the Interior Design Educator's Council (IDEC) conference recently in Richmond, Va. Her co-presenter was Dr. Demetriss Locke, Director of Student Success in Tallahassee (Fla.) Community College. The conference themes centered on creative ways to increase student success and engagement.

Dr. Julian, a member of the Facilities staff at ECA headquarters, is a registered interior designer who holds the LEED AP BD+C certification as well as the EDAC (Evidence-based Design Accreditation and Certification). She has served on the Virginia College Interior Design Advisory Board for almost 13 years.

At the Richmond event she was also presented with an IDEC award for her service to the industry.

Dr. Julian and Dr. Locke's presentation was entitled, "Birmingham International Mass Casualty Simulation: Using Practical Experiential Activities to Improve Student Success." The report used information gathered from a 2012 mock airport disaster drill in which Virginia College students in Nursing, Interior Design, and Cosmetology took part. The drill served as a simulated environment to teach skills such as critical thinking in practice, planning and specification, consensus building, team work, community service, social and behavioral norms, theories of human behavior, implementing and evaluating and multi-discipline collaboration.

During the presentation, Dr. Julian recognized a number of people for their help in the project including Virginia College in Birmingham Interior Design Program Director Jamie Stone, RID, Nursing Program Director Kathy Arnold, MSN, MAE, RN, nursing students and interior design students.
