Richmond Culinard student wins city-wide culinary award

Feb 22, 2013

Dayna Goodchild was one of several Virginia College culinary students attending a recent Richmond-area awards ceremony, but she was the only one who took home an award.

Ms. Goodchild, pictured below, was the recipient of the Culinary Student of the Year award recently at the second annual Elby's, which, according to sponsor Richmond magazine, "honors excellence in the Richmond region's restaurant community." The gala event took place at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and honored chefs and restaurant owners in ten categories, including best new restaurant, restaurant of the year and chef of the year.

"We are very happy about Dayna's award and proud to have her represent Culinard," said Michael McGhee, Program Director for Culinard, the Culinary Institute of Virginia College in Richmond.

Assisted by culinary students, Chef McGhee and his fellow chef instructors produced and served desserts and four small tapas-style offerings including:

  • Pojarsky Cassoulet (rabbit, parsnip, & white beans)
  • Local Winter Field Green Salad with Warm Black Lentil Vinaigrette
  • Celeriac Soup with Smoked Scallops
  • Smoked Bluefish Brandade with Pate a Choux Cup

Other chef instructors participating were Patricia Thorpe, Russell Cook, April Gregory, Daniel Graban, Lara Brown and David Hughes.
