Cupcake Competition Spurs Creativity

Chef Amber Moore's Advanced Techniques of Pastry Arts class (PBC1020) competed to become champion of the second quarterly Cupcake Wars at the Birmingham campus of Culinard, the Culinary Institute of Virginia College. Guest judges Chef George McMillan (Culinard Instructor), Anthony Palmer (Admissions), and David Grier (Student Services), judged contestants on various components such as Cake, Icing, Garnish, Filling, Taste and Presentation.
Chef Moore's students created some fantastic cupcake entries including the Cookie Monster, S'mores, Reese's, Chocolate Delicacy, Butterscotch Surprise and Spring Fling. Students were asked create an item that reflected their personalities and/or personal taste in flavor, color or style. First runner-up was Mario Owen's Chocolate Citrus cupcake and second runner-up went to Josephine Kilcullen's Caramel Macchiato cupcake. In the end, all judges agreed that the Angelica Smith's Maple Bacon Pancake was the cupcake to beat and chose it as the winner.
