NECB MBEC Program Chair Michele Jurgens to Speak About Lessons Learned from the BP Oil Spill at 2014 Governance, Risk Management and Compliance Summit
Feb 25, 2014
BOSTON– February 25, 2014 – New England College of Business and Finance (NECB), named for the past three years as the most affordable private college in New England by the U.S. Department of Education and a leading institution of online education designed for working adults seeking career advancement, today announced that Michele Jurgens will present at the 2014 Governance, Risk Management and Compliance Summit on Thursday, March 6. The annual conference will take place March 4 through 6 in Boston and will feature presentations and workshops about topics ranging from cybersecurity to auditing. Jurgens, chair of NECB's Master of Science in Business Ethics and Compliance program, will discuss the mistakes BP made during the infamous April 2010 oil spill and explain how other companies can avoid similar situations.
"Though the Deep Water Horizon disaster was truly the result of mistakes by multiple parties, the blame is consistently placed upon BP," said Jurgens. "We can take from this unfortunate situation a better understanding of reputational risk management and learn how to prevent similar crises."
During Jurgens's presentation, attendees will learn about the factors contributing to reputational risk for large corporations similar to BP and the circumstances under which firms are the most at-risk for reputational harm. They will analyze the importance of external partnerships and coalitions in managing risk and the role of business ethics and compliance officers in combating such risk.
Prior to joining NECB, Jurgens taught strategy, corporate social responsibility and management to executives and graduate students at Harvard Business Publishing, Hult International Business School and Harvard Extension School. She has more than 20 years of experience of executive leadership in strategy, marketing and management consulting.
