Virginia College in Jackson Adds Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Program and Teaching Lab

JACKSON, Miss. – August 11, 2014 – Virginia College in Jackson is pleased to announce an expansion of its list of programs to include a new 12-month Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC-R) Technician diploma. This addition includes a 2,922 sq.-ft. build-out project for a new HVAC-R teaching lab located on campus at 5841 Ridgewood Road in Jackson. Interested applicants can enroll now for the program which begins in October.
"I am thrilled that the HVAC-R program will now be offered at Virginia College in Jackson," said Milton Anderson, the president of Virginia College in Jackson. "Our students are going to get valuable, hands-on experience with the most up-to-date equipment and field training in the community. What we offer will be mutually beneficial for both the students and their future employers as these companies will be employing some of the most skilled technical school graduates in the area."
Education Corporation of America (parent company of Virginia College in Jackson), through its Supplier Diversity Program has awarded the contract to build out the new lab and classroom area to ABG Contractors, Inc., a general contractor based out of Jackson. Most recently, ABG Contractors, owned by Kenny Hunter, was selected by the Business Center and Department of Commerce as Minority Construction Firm of the Year in 2013. "ABG Contractors has a long history of excellent craftsmanship with numerous awards that reflect their quality of work, and we are happy to employ a locally owned business in the Jackson area," said Anderson.
With expected completion by late August, the new facility will provide a real-world, hands-on learning environment for students of the new HVAC-R program. Classrooms will be outfitted with a soldering and brazing design lab as well as a refrigeration lab equipped with a walk-in cooler/freezer and ice machine. The diploma program will provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely install, troubleshoot and repair equipment used in the home and light commercial industry.
