Chef-Instructor Matthew Dyer, with the help of Chef-Instructor Jane-Ellen Shumate and students at Culinard, the Culinary Institute of Virginia College in Birmingham, created a large display cake for the 30th birthday celebration of Camp Smile-A-Mile on February 28.

In addition to the display cake, Chef Dyer also made 30 individual white chocolate cakes for special tables at the event.  At the event's live auction his offer to cook dinner for 10 people resulted in a $5500 donation to the Camp.

Chef Dyer's personal involvement with the organization--whose mission is "to provide year-round challenging, unforgettable recreational and educational experiences for young cancer patients, their families as well as young adult survivors from Alabama at no cost to the families"--also includes cooking at the camps and visiting youngsters at Children's of Alabama who are too sick to attend camp, which is located in nearby Lake Martin, Alabama.
